Every bank in the country files the same quarterly reports, and the numbers in them tell a story, if you know where to look. Our reports and analysis put those numbers in front of you in a form you can actually read. Pick any bank by name, city, state or RSSD, and page through its performance quarter by quarter, on your phone or at your desk.
The reports follow the way we teach bank analysis: Profile, Return, Risk, Capital and Growth. Start with the shape of the bank, its size, loan mix and deposit mix, then look at how it earns, the risks it carries (asset quality, liquidity and interest rate risk), the capital behind it, and how fast it's growing. Each page shows the level, the trend and the change, with the bank's peers alongside for context and market rates on hand for comparison.
Guides sit next to the reports to help you ask the right questions. One walks through each section with what to look for and what to ask. Another follows how far and how fast a bank's deposit costs followed the Fed through the last rate cycle. A third puts two banks side by side, page by page and quarter by quarter.
The data comes from the FFIEC's Uniform Bank Performance Report, updated each quarter, and goes back to 2005. You can look at one bank without an account; a free membership opens five banks and every guide. Our advice is the same as in the classroom:
know the bank's story first, then check whether the numbers reflect it.
